Well, my efforts to get this newsletter out every Friday continue to be frustrated by work. I may have to rethink my game plan — either in terms of which day of the week or the frequency or both.
In the case of this particular week, it’s post-production on the LA Law pilot that is keeping me busiest. Today, we deliver the 1st Network Cut as well as something called a “Series Document,” a 7-page (per network guidelines) document which outlines our plan for the the potential first season in terms of tone, character arcs, character dynamics, and potential storylines. The exercise is not unlike shopping for furniture for a house you may never get to live in.
Suffice it to say, I’m insanely proud of the show we’ve created and filmed. I say “suffice it to say” as if that’s a given, but I’ve worked on a number of pilots that were hardly worthy of pride, so it’s not something one can always count on. But this one — particularly the directing work by Anthony Hemmingway and a murderers’ row cast — is something very special. I hope the network gods smile favorably upon us and you get to see it someday.
In the meantime…
HAN SOLO & CHEWBACCA
I delivered the pre-LucasFilm draft of the script for Issue 5. You can check out Phil Noto’s glorious cover for same below:
This is a fun issue which concludes the first arc despite ending on a series of quite-crazy cliffhangers. I can’t wait to see this one come together.
I also delivered a revised outline for the second arc which I’m extremely excited about. Working in a galaxy far, far away continues to be one of the most creative and rewarding experiences of my life…
LAST FLIGHT OUT
This past Wednesday, we dropped the sixth and final issue of Last Flight Out. Appropriately, we gathered the team on Zoom to discuss the trade paperback which will be coming out in September. Specifically, we chatted about the kind of backmatter we want to include. I’m really excited about the stuff we’ll be sharing, including some new content to be written by moi.
PROJECT CRACKERJACK
I’m also excited to say that we found a publisher for PROJECT CRACKERJACK. It’s still too early to reveal what the project or publisher is, but this is an exciting next step.
PROJECT WINDOW
In further comic book news, PROJECT WINDOW was announced yesterday. It’s an original graphic novel that I’m publishing with Dark Horse. OGN’s are a format that I haven’t played with much, but truly enjoy and I love how this one is shaping up. You can read more about it here. And you can check out the beautiful cover by Beni R. Lobel (Batman: Arkham Unhinged) and colorist Christopher Sotomayor (Swashbucklers: The Saga Continues) below.
Well, that covers just about everything, methinks. Have a great weekend.
Be good to each other.
Best,
Marc
