One of the many consequences of the pandemic is that time has lost all meaning. Last holiday season — which, I would bet folding money was just last week — I was feeling (and still feel) like time was passing with so much swiftness that I wasn’t accomplishing anything. Accordingly, one of my 2021 resolutions was to keep a list of the writing I was getting done so that I could look back at the end of the year to find evidence that I was actually being productive despite the fact the days were whipping past.
Here is that list.
LA Law - Pilot Outline and Script (w/ Ubah Mohamed)
Prophet - screenplay revisions
PROJECT VICTORIAN - pitch for television series
PROJECT WINDOW - graphic novel outline and script
D’var Torah - This wasn’t a pitch or a script, but it was actual writing that I’m giving myself “credit” for. In February, I wrote and delivered a d’var Torah (kind of like a sermon, also known as a “drash”) for my temple on the Ki Tasa Torah portion. I was waaaaay outside my comfort zone but it was a thoroughly educational and enjoyable exercise. If you’re curious, you can read the finished product here.
Green Lantern Ep. 102 - multiple drafts (w/ Seth Grahame Smith)
Last Flight Out #s 4-6 (scripts)
PROJECT ARTERY - first draft plus revisions (w/ [REDACTED])
PROJECT CRACKERJACK #s 1-4 (scripts)
PROJECT ENCORE #s 4-5 (scripts)
PROJECT RED - short pitch for comic book project
Star Wars: Han Solo & Chewbacca - Outline and Scripts for Issues 1-3
PROJECT GO - pitch for feature film adaptation of [REDACTED]
Pitch for feature adaptation of PROJECT ENCORE
PROJECT GRANITE - pitch for television series
PROJECT MARBLE - pitch for feature film quadrilogy (w/ [REDACTED])
PROJECT REVERSAL - script for 10-page Marvel comic
PROJECT SOVEREIGN - proposal for comic book series
Bad Boys 4 (I did a take for this back in October. Didn’t get the gig, but really had a blast thinking about this one.)
PROJECT FROST - first draft plus revisions
A few takeaways from this exercise:
A lot of my work in 2021 was on projects that haven’t been made public yet. Something to look forward to in ‘22.
There are a fair amount of comic book projects on the list. In total, I wrote 12 issues, a graphic novel, and a 10-pager and much of it has yet to be announced.
Many of these projects are pitches into a very uncertain and fluctuating entertainment industry landscape. Oy.
Plus… there’s this newsletter, which continues to be a lot of fun. One humble request before I leave you: According to Substack, there’s a fairly significant discrepancy between the number of people who read this thing and the number who actually subscribe. If you’re reading, please consider subscribing because… actually, I don’t know. It’s good for my self-esteem I guess. I promise not to sell your information or anything like that.
Happy holidays and be good to each other.
